چکیده

The present article is an overview of some mathematical results, which provide elements of rigorous basis for some multiscale computations in materials science. The emphasis is laid upon atomistic to continuum limits for crystalline materials. Various mathematical approaches are addressed. The setting is stationary. The relation to existing techniques used in the engineering literature is investigated. Mathematics Subject Classification. 35-xx, 39-xx, 41-xx, 49-xx, 65-xx, 68-04, 73-xx. A Continuum Model For Stone-wales Defected Carbon Nanotubes

In this paper, a continuum model is proposed so that a Stone-Wales (SW) defected carbon nanotube (CNT) is replaced by an initial circumferential crack in a continuum cylindrical shell. For this purpose, the critical energy release rate and then the fracture toughness of a defected CNT are calculated using the results of an existing atomistic-based continuum finite element simulation. Finally, t...

About an analytical verification of quasi-continuum methods with !-convergence techniques

Quasi-continuum (QC) methods are computational techniques, which reduce the complexity of atomistic simulations in a static setting while keeping information on smallscale structures and effects. The main idea is to couple atomistic and continuum models and thus to obtain quite detailed but still not too expensive numerical simulations. We aim at a mathematically rigorous verification of QC met...

Blended Atomistic-to-Continuum coupling analyses and methods

This article considers the blending of atomistic and continuum problems on a bridging subdomain building upon the ideas introduced in [1, 2, 7]. The continuity of the atomistic and continuum solutions is imposed by a constraint operator using Lagrange multipliers. These methods are stated in an abstract form. The consistency of these methods is analyzed. A new blending model is designed using m...

Researchers Discuss Atomistic-to-Continuum (AtC) Coupling

On March 20, 2006, researchers from around the world gathered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a two-day workshop on atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) coupling analysis. The Computer Science Research Institute at Sandia National Laboratories sponsored the workshop, which was organized by Claude Le Bris (École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées), Jacob Fish (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), and Pavel ...

The continuum elastic and atomistic viewpoints on the formation volume and strain energy of a point defect

We discuss the roles of continuum linear elasticity and atomistic calculations in determining the formation volume and the strain energy of formation of a point defect in a crystal. Our considerations bear special relevance to defect formation under stress. The elasticity treatment is based on the Green’s function solution for a center of contraction or expansion in an anisotropic solid. It mak...
